PORTRAIT PROCEDURE:
My first session with the client involves discussion of pose, background, clothing, and whether or not there will be any special personal objects. We will also discuss the subject's personal characteristics. Then I will take reference photos. I then narrow down a selection of the best references and create thumbnail sketches from these. The client then agrees on a preferred sketch, and painting begins.
THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR THE PORTRAIT:
Where will it hang? Vertical or horizontal format? Formal or informal? Indoors or out?
Individual portrait - focus is on unique personality
Double, group portrait - focus is on relationship (also consider who will inherit in future)
Special objects or interest, ex: reading, flowers, toys
I like my paintings to express a narrative feel, instead of a static, posed portrait. And sometimes incorporating and object or interest can be helpful in creating this. I strive to create a beautiful work of art, admired for its beauty and merit, whether one knows the sitter or not.
